The original survey entitled, "A Record of Significant Historic Structures in Long Beach, California - 1981 - Carroll Park," was produced by the City of Long Beach, Office of Cultural Heritage, Department of Planning and Building, following an eight-month survey conducted by the City under the sponsorship of the California Office of Historic Preservation. As a result of this effort, Carroll Park was designated a Historic Landmark District in 1982. Of the 125 homes surveyed, 79 structures were selected to represent the Carroll Park area because they were in an unaltered state, were unique in their architectural style, or housed someone who played an important role in the development of Long Beach. Record research, field surveys, photography, and preparation of descriptions were the major components of the original survey. Much of this work was accomplished by dedicated volunteers, who resided in Carroll Park and were the founding members of the Carroll Park Association.

In 2019, Leah Workneh, a resident of Carroll Park, replaced the original photographs taken in 1981 with current color photos for each of the houses in the original survey.
